Safari 1.3.2 problems on Mac Powerpook

Dec 8, 2007 1:54PM PST

I have a Mac Powerbook running system 10.3.9 and lately my Safari 1.3.2 app. stalls when opening.

It seems to fix itself after a few days and runs fine for a while and then it will start to stall again. It tries to open then and the blue bar at the will move across then stop and the "wheel of death" will start to spin and not stop.

Firefox works fine through all of this (maybe I should just use that). Any helpful hints out there?

Thanks in advance.

Tony

standard trouble shooting...

1) Repair permissions using disk utility.

2) Run Apple Software updater.

3) Repair permissions using disk utility... again.

Does the Safari problem persist?

Thanks but...

Thanks for the advice. There must be some bigger issue going on.

I opened my Applications folder, clicked on Utilities and then double clicked on Disk Utility. The Dialog box opens and asks me to select a Disk, Volume or Image. I select "the g4" (the name of my hard drive) and, like Safari, the wheel starts spinning and doesn't stop. Should I try starting with the shift key down (extensions off)?

Any hints on where can find Apple Software Updater you mentioned?

Thanks again for your help. It sounds so simple but I guess it's not.

You can try with extensions off,

but for this activity - repairing permissions - it does not really matter.

How long did you wait from the time you started the Permissions Repair until you stopped it. If this is the first time you are doing this, or if there is not much room left on the internal drive, it *could* take a long time.

As for the Apple Software updater, I do not recommend running it until the Permissions are repaired. You might look for the systems disks - you can boot from the main one and I'm pretty sure you can run the Permissions repair from there.

Once the Permissions are repaired, if you booted from the CD (when the computer is on, insert the CD in the drive, restart and hold the C until the machine is booting), you should probably verify the disk while you are at it.

After this, then you can take a look at updating, When you are in the Finder, under the Apple, select "Software Update"... You should be on a broadband connection (DSL, cable modem, etc...) when you do this. Your 'puter has some catching up to do.

All sound advice,

but this machine is up as far as 10.3 went.

He may be a few security updates missing but nothing in the way of OS updates.

Not sure what is going on here but the permissions thing needs to be done.

Safari's back but...
Dec 11, 2007 2:45PM PST

Unfortunately I still cannot run the Disk Utility (which worries me) so I never got to the Software Updater but now Safari works. As I said in my original post, it goes down for a few days or a week and then, without warning, starts to work again.

I'm flummoxed.

Thanks again to both of you for your help. Maybe I don't want to know what's wrong.
