S3 control bar task utility icon--a hijacking?

Dec 17, 2003 12:40AM PST

An icon keeps loading itself onto my toolbar at the lower right hand corner of my computer. It says "S3 control taskbar utility". When I right click on it I get a box with:
CRT (with check mark beside it), and LCD and DVI listed below it, with "Exit" at the bottem.

What is this? I have never had it before, and I am constantly getting hijacked to "about.com" with a blank screen that goes no where. Is this spyware?

I have a compaq presario 6000 with Sindows XP Home Edition.

Any suggestions?

I believe that if you look at your display properties you will find you have an S3 ProSavage8 integrated on your motherboard and you should be able to disable the control's appearance in the taskbar. The options you list allow you to set it for what it will be used with.

Your user manual might even explain it.

If you are constantly getting hijacked locate "HijackThis" http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/

AdAware and Spybot first. HijackThis is not for the inexperienced. If a person were to delete everything it reported, they would trash their computer.

True, but if they read the tutorial and explanation pages...
