Sullivan. I missed hearing any details about Limbaugh's attack on Pope Francis as a Marxist but The Nun's Story caused me to look up Rush's Pronunciamento on the Pope and quickly noticed Andrew Sullivan of The Dish's response to the stinky-one's errant nonsense. It's a pleasure to read someone logical and intelligent counter a blowhard who just makes it up as he goes. There are advantages to a Jesuit education.
I particularly like the suggestion that Limbaugh sees himself as the pope of The Church of Unfettered Capitalist Exploitation more usually refered as CUCE (pronounced Kookie, and that was an entirely unplanned and fortuitous acronym).
" I'm telling you, I'm not Catholic, but I know enough to know that this would have been unthinkable for a pope to believe or say just a few years ago." Rush Limburger.
" Really? Limbaugh specifically invokes the great anti-Communist Pope, John Paul II, as an alleged contrast with this leftist gobbledegook. So let us look at John Paul II's discussion of capitalism and communism in his 1987 Encyclical, Sollicitudo Rei Socialis:
[which translates as The Concern for Social Matters (of the Church is to be understood following Concern) some have translated it as the Social Order. Wikipedia's translation is completely wrong RTB]
" The tension between East and West is an opposition ... between two concepts of the development of individuals and peoples, both concepts being imperfect and in need of radical correction ... This is one of the reasons why the Church's social doctrine adopts a critical attitude towards both liberal capitalism and Marxist collectivism." Pope John Paul II
I remember being struck by this Encyclical at the time, since it came out the year my son was born, and hoping that it meant a more Liberal Church more inclined to help the poor in Mexico and Central and South America. But like Rush, I'm not a Catholic, don't pay close attention to the details of Catholic politics and I found JP II too conservative for me. I should have known better than to do anything that the Smelly Cheese does.
Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly
Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
