Running HP Deskjet 5850 on Vista 64-bit

Aug 25, 2008 1:29PM PDT

I tried the HP website, and it says to use the "Deskjet 5600" as a substitute driver, but when I try to do that, I just keep getting errors (the driver itself installs fine, but when I try to print, then I get the errors). In any event, the PC doesn't appear to recognize the 5850 at all, and only "recognizes" the 5600 that the driver is there for. Does anyone have any suggestions for where I can go from here?

Who installed Vista 64? I find many people that install Windows (all versions) may need help finding motherboard drivers, or discover that the BIOS is outdated.

The 5600 driver works with my DJ5850
I'm using it through the ethernet port, not tried the USB one
Be aware that this is an alternate driver and forget about two sided printing functions, the 5600 does not support it.
HP does not plan to release a driver for the 5800 serie, are they too lazy ?

I have the same problem except with windows 7 32bit
my problem differs slightly in that I can find no such '5600' driver they refer to, there is no entry for it under their search and I am unable to find it by other means
any ideas?
