Runner File name lacks...

May 9, 2005 9:28PM PDT

On start up I get a message "Runner file name (Compaq connections.exe) lacks a '_' (the app id separator)".

I have a Compaq Presario running Windows XP. I recently uninstalled Norton AntiVirus and wonder if it has something to do with this. Otherwise, I have my mother and her friend, both in their 70's, staying with me and sometimes they download crap. I don't know that they have but it's a distinct possibility. Any ideas?

Reinstall norton
May 9, 2005 10:21PM PDT

Try reinstalling Norton and see if it goes away. Its possible you had a bad uninstall, thats what it sounds like.

After that try doing the recommended uninstall instead of a custom uninstall of Norton again if it will let you. It sounds like the file Norton uses to connect to the internet to do various things like updates.

I did a quick google search but nothing turned up. You can also try http://www.answersthatwork.com you may be able to find the answer there.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful than that.

Thanks for the info. I can't reinstall Norton since it was a free trial on my computer. I used all the uninstall features through XP. I don't think its actually hurting anything...just annoying me.

Norton

Norton makes for a painstaking uninstall. It's bloated.

Not Yet

No, not yet. The message pops up every time I start up my computer. Annoying but it doesn't seem to be affecting anything. I do wish I could get rid of it, though.

Just sharing the tool I used.
May 28, 2005 1:48AM PDT

I use HIJACKTHIS which is a POWER TOOL to remove items that I no longer wish on my machine.

It is a POWER TOOL so you must be sure of what you are doing. I offer only the solution and no support for this POWER TOOL.

My experience with the Runner File problem
Jun 4, 2005 9:21AM PDT

I had the same problem with my "HP Pavilion a810n" and "Updates from HP.exe". In my case a recent scan with "Spybot - Search & Destroy" showed up the backweb application which was listed as a possibly undesireable application. I removed it and this message started( the HP version) on startup. I used Spybot to restore "backweb" and the message stopped.

Since HP and Compaq are one and the same now, I suspect that "Compaq Connections.exe" and "Updates from HP.exe" are the same utility under different names and that it uses "backweb" libraries.

Is there any chance that you deleted any directories or registry entries either directly or as in my case using a utility?

Hmmm
Jun 5, 2005 5:14AM PDT

I don't think so. I only used the uninstall utility and used it solely on the Norton application listed. If I did more than that I don't know how I did it or how to undo it, especially since it was a while ago. Thanks for the info, though, and I'll look into that further!
