rundll error

Feb 8, 2009 3:05AM PST

I'm running Windows XP, everything seens to be running fine, except when I first turn on the computer. I get an error loading box,
RUNDLL which says( C:\windows\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3\dlbutime.dll)..the specified module could not be found.
Can anyone tell me what this is, and how to get it to go away. like I said, I can't find anything that is not working properly, and just don't know what it is I'm looking at. any help will be much appreciated.

It's Related Dell PhotoPrinter Drivers
Feb 8, 2009 4:13AM PST

Do you have such installed on your computer? Did you recently uninstall such?

If you have a Dell PhotoPrinter, you might try reinstalling the software.

If you don't need the Photoprinter file to run at startup, you might try opening "msconfig", (Click on Start-Run, type "msconfig", then click on OK), then select the "Startup" tab and see if there is a box which can be UNCHECKED there..

You could also try searching the computer registry at the two locations below to see if there is a startup "Run" call for that file.. Open the Registry Editor, then make a backup of the registry.. Once that's done, navigate to the "Run" keys/folders at both of the paths below.. If you find a String Value for the "dlbutime.dll", delete that specific line only.

HKey_Current_User/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run
HKey_Local_ Machine/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run

Hope this helps.

Yes To DELL PHOTO PRINTER
Feb 8, 2009 4:45AM PST

I spent some time with DELL about this printer yesterday, and later on that night when I turned the machine on this happened.
I just re installed everything with the drivers and utilities disc that came with the printer, got the same error. I do not understand what you want me to do with the registry information you gave me, I just don't know what to do.I'm sure if you get me to the spot whare I can check or un check somthing I can handle that. Thanks W.

Not sure what the problem is

Grif's instructions were very comprehensive. Perhaps if you look through them again step by step.

You say you spent some time with Dell about this printer. Why was that? Do you still have this printer installed or not?

MSCONFIG
Feb 8, 2009 5:13AM PST

If you can get into MSCONFIG, (the System Configuration Editor), then you're halfway there.

If you are having difficulty, go to Start > click Run, then in the small Run dialog box type in msconfig and click OK.

When the System Configuration Editor window displays, click the Startup tab. In there you will see a list of files, (software), that tries to load on startup. If there is a tick by any line, then that software will load when you start the computer.

But by removing the tick, that will stop that software from loading, and as Grif said, that error message you are getting possibly relates to a printer setting. Look down the list for anything relating to that printer, and if you find it, remove the tick.

If you do remove any ticks, the following will happen;

1] When you click Apply, you will get a small warning message. Just click OK to that.

2] When you next turn the computer on and as windows loads, it will display an information window saying you have chosen "Selective Startup". You don't want to see that every time you start the computer, so you can disable that window, "from within the window itself", then click OK.

As to the Registry, if you have never used it before, then I would leave that alone. Unwary users who change registry settings incorrectly can do major damage to a computer operating system.

hope that helps.

Yes, Look At 'msconfig' First..
Feb 8, 2009 8:45AM PST

As described by Mark, after you type "msconfig" in the run line, click on OK. When the System Configuration Utility opens, click on the "Startup" tab, then look for any line that mentions the file you've listed. If there's a line there, simply UNCHECK the box next to it and click on OK.

You only need to deal with 'regedit" if there is no listing in msconfig.

Hope this helps.
