Routinely backing up hard drive

Feb 10, 2011 12:38PM PST

We have an online back up service (carbonite) but I also like to have everything backed up on an external hard drive. So far we have been manually dragging the folders over to the hard drive to back them up. I don't like this because on a Mac it replaces the entire folder rather than just the new files and we've lost a lot of files that way (oops). I'm sure there's a better way and I'm hoping someone can tell me about it. In addition to general documents, my husband has a lot of music and I have a lot of pictures that I want to keep at full resolution. What's the best way to back up only the new files that have been added to the desktop so I don't have to go through each individual folder?

If you have OS X 10.5 or above

you could use the, included in OS X, backup utility called Time Machine.

This will backup your drive regularly and without any input from you, after the initial setup.

OR

If you are a MobileMe member, Apple offers a piece of software called Backup.
