Question

Router with efective parental control.

Oct 24, 2015 5:17PM PDT

Hello all!

This is a serious matter. So I thank you for everyone who helps me on it.

My son is already an adolescent. 13 years old. And since sometime ago, he is having problem with porn addicting. No matter how I try to educate him. No matter what I do to create better incentives. No matter what I do to stop him from seeing porn. The internet nowdays is flooded with porn or sexual-related content/images. Even sites that are not porn specific, will contain something that will fire up his disease.

This should not be a problem, however. Because technology is meant to be controlled. This is not Matrix, yet. But I am having serious problem with that.

My son only device to access the Internet is a Chromebook. Other places he goes elsewhere is totally secured against that. So, the time spent in our home is the problem.

I know there are several parental control and Open DNS that might help. But they only offer a pre-based black list of adult content sites. What means that he can still find a hidden site at a foreign language or use the Google Images to see something. It is not 100% accurate.

The only way I found to be 100% accurate is actually very simple: disabling <IMG> and <VIDEO> scripts. So no images and video on any websites. Text only. Furthermore, I can whitelist websites to show images and videos.

For example, for Chrome users, there is an extension that does exactly that: Script Safe. But it is just an extension that can be disabled anytime.

I wonder, there is something similar that can be done on routers? Or someone has a better idea?

My son healthy is starting to change already. Internet nowdays is essential to life. But If something cannot be done, I will have to give up of Internet with my son!

What worked here.

Was to put the machine/laptop in the kitchen area. There is no 100% going to get it all software today as the internet has as you found a bazillion porn sites. Maybe that's it. Blacklist all but the ones you allow.

Get a dedicated Access Point for your son

Hi Chip, it's a tough problem and most routers aren't up to scratch. There are more and more solutions out there now though.

With KoalaSafe, you get a WIFI access point specifically for your son. On his network, you determine the appropriate content, the times when he can be online and you get parental insights into his activity.

Your browsing stays on the main router.
