Router Settings

Jun 19, 2007 8:39PM PDT

We've just changed from BT to Talktalk.

Talk talk told us that we can use BT's router no problem at all.

Everything is running fine except for the fact that we can't access certain websites like eBay, paypal, hotmail, yahoo mail etc..

Talktalk have told me that I need to change the MTU from 1500 to 1400. When I do this and try to save it I get the message "Your PPP Username is not correct!"

According To Talktalk this is a setting BT has put on the router so that we can't change the settings and use there equipment with another ISP.

I've been told that I can download and use a patch /Firmware to resolve this problem. I'm not really sure how to go about this or how to do it. Can anyone help advise?

The router is a 2WIRE BT2700HGV

Thanks
Chris

Sorry but this discussion dies right there because you didn't tell what happens when you typed in "www.ebay.com". If it was a NAME RESOLUTION issue we get one message, but it's all in what those messages are that tells us what to look at.

Nothing happens! It just hangs for a while with a blank screen then you get the following message:

Firefox:

The connection was reset
The Connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.
* The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.

*If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.

* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

IE7: The normal

The page cannot be displayed

Talktalk have told me it's the settings on the 2WIRE router. but We can't change them without this firmware?

This can happen with DNS issues.

That helped us find a "direction."

1. First scan with this and eject ANY pests.
http://www.ewido.net/en/onlinescan/

Then retest.

2. Still failing? Open up a COMMAND WINDOW and type this.

NSLOOKUP

Now type in www.ebay.com and tell me the results.

I did the NSLOOKUP, and I get non-authoritative answer.

BT2700HGV setting MTU and bypass ppp error message
Jul 12, 2007 6:12AM PDT

Hi puddy7,
Don't know if you resolved this problem?
You are correct that it is the MTU setting of the router that is stopping you to go to certain sites.
I also have the BT2700HGV on Talktalk.
To get around the "ppp username is not correct" message, type in all the settings you want ie username, password, MTU=1400 etc.

Once done then "do not" apply.
Instead paste the following into the browser address bar and press return:
javascript:document.pagepost.submit();

It will accept your settings and you will then be able to visit the sites you have been having problems with.
