Question

Router? Bridge? What is it I need?

Mar 14, 2013 9:06AM PDT

Ok so I used to have a wireless modem/router which delivered all my online needs but recently moved into a shared house which already has an internet and a wireless router downstairs.

The only problem is I don't have wireless connectors for my Blu-ray Player, Xbox or PC.

What do I need in my room that will pick up the wireless connection and allow me to wire up my devices through ethernet? Some folks have suggested these but I'm not sure if that is what I need, just need confirmation beofre I spend the money!

Help please!

So this little guy...

So the guy you've linked above would be good for online gaming? MMO's, Xbox Live? Streaming HD movies too?

I'm a reviewer so I spend a lot of time on my kit mucking about with online features etc so I need to make sure I'm squeezing every last drop of bandwidth out of the wireless router downstairs lol.

Thankfully I'm not a tech reviewer because this is confuddling me something rotten

The thing is, faster is not always faster.

You can find discussions where folk turn down the router WiFi from 300 to 150 mbps and find it's faster. Some are finding that 802.11g is better in some setups. That's why I wrote to not be afraid to change it.

Parting nuggets.

Start simple with a broadcasting SSID and around here, WPA2 AES or personal security is fine. If you have PBC (push button configuration) enabled, try it first to save the usual running around.
