General discussion

Rollin' the dice

Mar 20, 2014 6:05AM PDT

I'm not one to talk on the phone all day ,only a little here and there. I might us an hour a month and maybe 2oo text messages a month and really only use wifi once in awhile but almost no data from my monthly plan . My contract is up with Verizon wireless now and I want to lose that $96.00 a month phone bill. So I'm gonna go on the CHEAP and try this company called Ting I've been hearing about on the net. -> https://ting.com/r/glyde#homeBanner and wonder if anyone here has had any experience with them. I live in Chicago

I got the new sim card yesterday and I have to return it as it's too big . They sent the 206 instead of the 406. Shocked

ROFL ... I did that only with one of mom's old diamond nail files but the chip itself is too long , there's no cardboard left . Hmmm Guess it's too late to return now lol. Got another one coming from California .

it's the right one this time. Just activated the phone with Ting , we'll see how long it takes to port over my phone number from Verizon.

Yeah you maybe right,

if this is a "lock" phone then the sim card is for LTE use and I wonder digger can get it on the cheap with Ting for the full use of this phone. I think digger need to talk with Ting some more about all these detail of the plan.

He's good to go

Their support pages (and other reliable cellular sites) refer to bringing in LTE devices.

for us here in the forums. Ting is pay as you go so I can jump out of it anytime if it stinks.

Had ATT for 15 years and they pi$$ed me off with the high prices and so did Verizon so now it's time for something completely different.

The good thing is...

...that it's not the only MVNO in town. You can choose others as well to save $$$.

I would dump ATT too if I could convince family to move elsewhere too (LOL).

Yeah me too but...
Mar 26, 2014 4:35AM PDT

can't think of anything that's cheap and good right now. I have already dumped my cable tv (been about 9 months now, didn't miss it at all). Of course there's VOIP, but the quality is just lousy and I really don't want to tie it together with internet service.

You should try Ooma if you need a less expensive & reliable VoIP home phone. Their service & Voice quality is great.

Looking at Ting here too.

My son is on VM at 30 a month with no real issues. But the phone has developed a fault. I might just do the Ting route on my out of service former sprint phone for him. The phone is in fine shape with a huge after market 3500 mAh battery and case. It goes days without a need to charge (remember I follow the ABC method.)

So I think we'll do that if he likes the HTC Evo 4G.

Maybe it will go 4G after all. It never did on Sprint.

Let me see how it goes

will it say 4G on the screen?

If I go to the setup screen.
Apr 3, 2014 3:24AM PDT

It's a feature of the phone but it never found a Sprint 4G tower or service in the years I carried it. When the contract was up, Sprint rewarded me with no reduction in rates so I split. Saving me about 500+ a year over Sprint. VM's unlimited data plan, while folk may debate it has been great.

PS. ABC = Always Be Charging. Sorry, forgot to write that.

phones activated and number's ported over, got Apple set up . Ting sent an e-mail saying current bill will be $6.00 LOL. We'll see in a month.

The signal is saying LTE and that 3G with 3 dots (strength). Now I have the long process of putting all of my contacts and phone numbers in. (I hate doing that stuff)

I have to put in a lot of phone numbers.

Also having difficulties setting up voice mail. I might have to call them.
No internet unless I have my wifi turned on even though in the settings at Ting Voicemail and Data are enabled.

Let the adventures begin....

Got it done
Apr 4, 2014 4:15AM PDT

Voice mail was working this morning, I had to call Ting to punch in a code to get internet working.
I was talking with them about the signal strength and said I was getting the same signal as I was with Verizon and she said that's because I'm probably using Verizon's cell tower . They have a deal with Verizon, and others , if no Sprint tower is around, they use others as part of the package.
I am getting 4G (LTE?)
With the internet activated the say my bill will be $15.00 a month . That's way better than the $96 I was paying Verizon..
Kind of stickin' it to Verizon huh? dropping them and than use their cell tower ROFL....

...Sprint/Verizon don't end their data roaming agreement Wink

Glad you got it working though. And don't booze it up too badly with all the extra scratch you have laying around 8-)

Make sure to add a google voice number to your google/gmail account, then download the Hangouts app for your new iphone. This will give you a way to call over wifi for free.

That's the one thing you need to get used to
Apr 4, 2014 11:57AM PDT

All the updates. More often the apps than iOS, but both really. Moving from Blackberry & Windows Mobile I have become accustomed to seeing them pop up every other day.

In addition to regular stock iPhones from all the carriers, I have had the opportunity to play with jailbroken versions. I don't see the same appeal that I used to loading custom ROMs all the time with my old HTC Windows Mobile phone (and others) <shrug>. There's basically an app for every function with iOS, so it's not as necessary IMNSHO. Perhaps being able to customize the home screen would be something down the road, but I'm not broken up about it any more.

Make certain you utilize iCloud service too for automatic backup purposes over wifi. Very handy, especially when you need to quickly restore the whole shebang.

I suppose so
Apr 4, 2014 9:49PM PDT

Well, it is a little different. As you say , I'm gonna have to get used to it. I'm not used to all of the e-mail about a stinkin' phone, Apple passwords, iTunes , Apple Store , you name it , I had to password it and confirm . So the dust should be settled now reight?

Now onto learning the phone and so on. Ill be doin' Google Voice number and Hangouts app today .
I think we have all of the bases covered now so I won't pester you folks anymore about it at least not for a month after I get the first bill. Than we'll really know if we like Ting.

Have a great day
