Roaming Profiles Broken

Aug 28, 2007 8:35AM PDT

Hi folks. We are having some trouble with roaming profiles. 90% of our users seem to be fine. But I have a handful of people on a handful of machines that are having trouble. When they log on, it will give an error (security error) and it will fail to load their profile, and it will create a temporary one. It doesn't do this every time however. If they continue to try, eventually it will let them on usually. Since it has been some what inconsistent, I am having a hard time narrowing it down to a computer, network, or user problem. Everything was working fine last spring, but when the staff got back this fall the problem appeared. I am wondering if one of the recent updates perhaps broke roaming profiles? Has anyone else run into this yet? Nothing else has changed on our network and it only seems to effect certain machines and certain users.

If I rebuild the users profiles it seems to help, although it hasn't fixed the problem... I am busy putting out lots of other fires, so I haven't had a lot of time to devote to this yet, so I wanted to see if anyone else was experiencing this problem?

Thanks.

More Information Would Help But Maybe...

It would be nice to know the exact versions of Windows that you're having issues with and what type of network server you've got going. And the EXACT error would sure help. Make sure all machines are Windows XP with SP2 and Windows 2000 with SP4.

And if you've got a new antivirus program, try temporarily disabling it on the affected machines.

Still, the links below might help:

Hope this helps.

We are running all Windows XP Pro SP2 work stations, on a Win Server 2003 environment. The only reason I am looking at an update problem, is because the machines that are giving me trouble, were all stored over the summer, so nothing has changed on them. The only changes would have been the updates that came through when they were turned on the last couple of weeks.

I suppose it's possible I am barking up the wrong tree with the update issue, but it's the only thing that makes sense, since the machines worked fine last spring before they were put away, and they don't work now.

I will have a user try to log in again and I can tell you exactly what the error message is. I just wanted to know if anyone else has run across this or not. Thanks for the help thus far.
