Resolved Question

RJ45 Used to bypass router?

Sep 10, 2014 9:40PM PDT

Hi!

I have 2 PCs in different rooms. I was wondering if connecting PC1 to a router then the RJ45 then back to the modem as well as PC 2 directly to the RJ45 would work... or if there is another solution I need. (See image)

Aside from the fact this would make cabling easier, my roommate needs to constantly reset the router (laptop keeps loosing connection for some reason) and I don't the rest of the net to suddenly go down every time the router is being reset... thus bypassing the router on PC 2.

Nice picture. RJ45 is just a kind of connector.
I'd do it the standard way. Put a router (maybe a switch suffices, you can disable the wireless part anyway) where the "RJ45" is in your picture and connect/configure the existing router as a WAP.

I was just trying to avoid this because a RJ45 splitter would be cheaper Happy I also think there may be a PEBCAK error...but don't tell my roommate.

Odd

The only RJ45 splitter require a joiner at the beginning of the run then a splitter at the end.

But let's go down the road that you want and wrongly assume this cable/other modem supports 2 ethernet ports or such.

Not only do you have a setup/hardware issue to solve but the ISP will want another subscription for the second internet IP. For me that would be about 50 bucks a month. If you were trying to cut costs, this would hammer your budget another 600 a year!

PS. Read more about splitter and why it won't work at link.

It worked!

I got a cheapo router from Craigslist and hooked it up this afternoon.
So far, so good. It's exactly as the picture, except I replaced the RJ45 with a router that has wireless disabled.

Thanks!
