risks with purchasing Gigabeat X30 before US release?

Nov 27, 2005 2:45PM PST

I am considering purchasing the new, yet to be released in the US, Toshiba Gigabeat X30. I recently lost my iPod 20G (3G) and am taking the opportunity to explore the other side. Of utmost importance is the ability to integrate with Napster-to-Go, while usability is my second criteria. However, I have questions specific to purchasing a player not yet released in the US:

1. are there any compatibility risks? Particularly w/ English Windows XP based programs.

2. will it have a US AC adapter?

3. And, finally, does anyone know about the likelihood of it being compatable with Napster-to-Go?

I appreciate anyone's assistance.

Otherwise, I will likely go for the Zen Touch (b/c of poor reviews current Gigabeat receives).

Thanks,

Dex

I'm going for it

Sorry I'm late deckerbj, but I just came across your post when doing a Google search for the X30. I hope you haven't already ordered your Zen Touch. I am also planning on ordering a Gigabeat X30, and I looked at your questions.

1) I don't know for sure, but if you order it from Geekstuff4u.com, the included software is supposed to be in English. Thus, I'm guessing it will work with most English PCs. http://www.akihabaranews.com/en/news-10567-X.html

2) If you get it from Geekstuff4u, the AC adapter handles 100-240V and uses a standard ''8'' jack. I assume you get the same AC adapter from any other place you order it from, too.

3) According to Pocket-Lint, the X30 is compatible with Windows Media 10 DRM, so it should work with subscription services.

Take note that I don't yet own an X30, so I can't guarantee anything, but I'm sure enough to go ahead and order one for myself.

Also, it looks like Geekstuff4u is the best place to get it from. I saw one site that had it for a shocking $280 (plus $25 shipping), but it didn't have a one-year warranty that's good in the U.S. like Geekstuff4u does.

I hope this was helpful!

too late, ... maybe

I already got eager and purchased a Cowon iAudio X5L. however, I am having a horrible time trying to get the DRM compatable functionality to work (requires beta version firmware - still beta for a reason!). I might send it back, and the x30 is one sweet looking alternative. Otherwise, I might just go w/ Phillips ...
