could anyone give me some advice on software for ripping a dvd to mpeg on a mac

Here I use Handbrake. Free, and will make a nice video for the Apple.

There is a video tutorial on youtube about how to extract DVD to MP4, I think the way is easy, so you can have it a try, and which offers a Mac version tool on it.

I used mac dvd ripper. It rips dvd to mpeg, mkv, vob, avi, mov, mp4 on mac easily.
