I very recently purchased a new Rio Carbon Pearl from Best Buy, and I have had problems with it right from the start.
The first sign of trouble was when I had to try three times to install the Rio Music Manager. The first two times, my computer couldn't even open the disk.
Next, once the Music Manager was installed, I connected the player to my computer using the USB cable that was included in the box. Didn't work. The Music Manager didn't recognize that the player was connected, and I'm fairly certain it was, seeing as the screen on the player said, "USB Connected. Idle."
I removed the player and tried again, this time going through My Computer to locate the device. I could find it easily enough, but I was unable to drag-and-drop files into it, which I could do with an old MP3 player of mine. Also, the trial files on the player weren't visible when I located the player through My Computer.
I disconnected it again and tried a million different ways a million different times. I've visited the Rio Audio support site and read and reread the users guide and Help menu in the Music Manager. Now, when I try to connect it to my computer, I get a message on the player saying, "Alert. Rio Carbon is having problems with this USB port. Please try another." I've tried every single one I can find on my computer and none have worked.
My player also turns on by itself every time I disconnect it. If you have any suggestions or ideas, I'd really appreciate it. I've already written an email to the support staff at Rio but I was also hoping to get advice from any of you. I'm disappointed in this product, especially as it was supposed to be a birthday present.
