Carbon and XP
Jan 10, 2005 1:21AM PST

As soon as I plug my Carbon into the USB port it is recognized by XP. You might check to see if you have something blocking access. It should be recognized as a portable harddrive and you'll have a popup to choose what program you'd like to open when you plug it in. It appears to work fine with XP Home and Pro.

Try plugging it into a different USB port and see what happens.

Rio Carbon

I use a Rio Carbon with Winxp, no problem. I would try to uninstall and reinstall the software, or go to the website and download the most recent version.
Are you using the front usb ports, or an unpowered hub. You have to plug the rio into usb's that are on the back of your computer or into a powered usb hub. The front usb hubs cannot provide enough power to some usb devices such as mp3's and removeable hard drives.
Hope that helps

USB Issues

Good point. My Carbon won't work on my laptop without a externally powered hub. No problems at all on my desktop. On the laptop it just reads Idle with plugged in.
