Ringtone Rippers & Downloads

Feb 26, 2005 12:49PM PST

I've seen several websites offering software to rip ringtones from mp3's and even CD's. Can anyone tell me if these things really work? Once I rip, how do I upload to my phone (Motorola V551 on Cingular)?

If I purchase a ringtone or wallpaper from a site, how do I download? Do I need a multimedia or internet package?

ringtone

Just go to the internet site and order the ringtone. It comes to your phone just like a text message. A multimedia pkg is suggested to avoid paying for data usage ($.01 per kb without a data pkg). You will still be billed additionally for the ringtone ($1.99 to $2.49). Multimedia packages start at $2.99 for 500kb of data. Hope that helps.

it works

it works but you might have to experiment with parameters such as "Bit rate and Channels" i use 64kbs for ?Stereo Bit Rate:?, 22,050 Hz for ?Sample Bit Rate:?, and Mono for ?Channels:? for my Mot 710. but after you get the right parameters for your phone, you have all the mp3 tones you want for FREE. after you rip, use this site:

http://www.funformobile.com/

to send to your phone. there is a mp3 sample to test your phone there. there is also info about how you can rip your files. yes you need a WAP package to get your mp3 tones. hope it helps

What is WAP and how do I enable?

I apologize for asking what are probably basic questions, but I'm kind of new to using cell phones for other than basic telephony.

What is a WAP package? Do I need it to upload any ringtones, or just for ripped tones, or just for tones from funformobile?

We are getting the mini USB cable and synch software from Motorola. Can we use that to somehow upload ringtones?

WAP

To make it easy WAP=Wireless Application Protocol (wireless internet for your phone). You don't have to pay extra to have the feature only the amount of data usage. Typical ringtones can be from 40-80 kb (cost on Cingular @ $.01/kb).

If you buy the USB cable, you don't need to worry about data package. With the right software, you can send ringtones directly to the phone.
