Hi all,

I have been monitoring this problem for some time now to determine exactly what is triggering it . It occurs approx. 9 out of 10 times. It happens when I right click on DRIVES and folders but NOT on files. However if I right-click on a file first (that is after logon) the chances of it crashing when I right click on a folder is reduced to 4 out of 10 and the chances of it crashing when I right click on a DRIVE is reduced to 7 out of 10.

By the way I can always right-click on the MY Computer icon in the Start menu without any problems.

The problem has only been moderately frustrating because I don't need to use right click that much.

There is some information available from the EVENT viewer. According to it there are 4 faulting modules: ntdll.dll; shell32.dll; explorer.exe and an unknown module (version 0.0.0.0 seems creepy to me). Each module error is generated separately, so that when the crash occurs it displays the windows error report three times and I click close to get rid of them and then explorer restarts (somtimes it displays a prompt that internet explorer has experienced an error and will now close; so I click ok and then explorer restarts).

Here are the logs:

In reply to: Right click and boom!! I crach

I do not allow norton auto-protect service only the scriptblocking service. I use norton to perform manual scans. I have found that no one antivirus software can detect all viruses. At present I have a virus in my system restore that norton cannot detect but AVG detects and cant remove.

System Restore is protected....

In reply to: PS

No A/V software will remove it. Best way is to disable system restore... reboot and enable again. You loose all previous restore points but it will clear the virus from your system.

Hope this helps and do report the outcome.

Virus gone....Problem still exits

In reply to: System Restore is protected....

My problem was really with the right-click leading to windows explorer craching. I mentioned the virus only for interest. I know that could not be the problem.

Could it be a mouse problem? try another mouse. Just a wild suggestion.

Re: Right click and boom!! I crach

In reply to: Re: Right click and boom!! I crach

No it's not the mouse.
The problem only occurs when I rifht-click on a DRIVE e.g C: D: E: F: G: H: I: J: K: L: M: N: oh and A:
I have all these drives and the problem occurs regardless of which one.

It alos happens to a less degree when I right-click on FOLDERS.

It NEVER happens with normal files of any kind.

Are you running any mouse drivers?
Logitech or Microsoft? Uninstall them and try again.

Also, does it do it in Windows Explorer and also in
MyComputer?

explorer.exe, version 6.0.2800.1106, faulting module shell32.dll

Based on the above information, my suggestion is to read "[url=Windows XP stops responding when you download updates from Windows Update (Q831429)" and then download and use "IEFix" - a general purpose fix for Internet Explorer (Win 98/ME/2000/XP):

a. Registers Urlmon.dll, Mshtml.dll, Actxprxy.dll, Oleaut32.dll, Shell32.dll, Shdocvw.dll, [Q281679].

b. Refreshes Internet Explorer using IE.INF method. Note:

"Unable to Install Internet Explorer 6 on Windows XP (Q304872)"

"How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP (Q31837Cool"

c. Initiates "SFC /Scannow" (Win2K&XP), [Q310747].
