Microsoft is known to issue you a new key if the machine was sent in for service and you run out of activations. But some call that "a loss." I know to ask Microsoft in these situations.
Beware going legal on them. They may let you take that path.

My ACER laptop running Vista Home Premium[OEM] is currently in for a warranty claim for the mother board. The computer came with a trial version of MS Office 2007, which was paid for and activated. There were no discs, but only a key to enter. I can activate 3 instances, and two have been used, including the laptop in for warranty claim. My question: My files and installed programs are of no concern, but will my copy of MS Office be reactivated ? Or will I lose it, as it is not under the warranty claim ? Then, on what legal basis can I claim my money back [money paid to activate the trial version] ? Thanks.
