Well Ed

If by "external flash outlet", you mean a "hot shoe",
your are in luck.

They only put hot shoes on the more expensive digital cameras. The $500 limit reduces the pool of prospects.

I found four:

Konica-Minolta Z2 - 4 meg - 10X zoom
Konica-Minolta Z3 - 4 meg - 12X zoom & image stabilization
Olympus 5060 - 5 meg - 4X zoom
Sony V1 - 5 meg - 4X zoom

To find the Z3 and 5060 for under $500, you will have to do some shopping. But they can be had for under $500.

The Z2 and V1 will run about $400.

The best thing about retirement is that you are never late for anything.
Because you don't have to be there anyway.

One old phto to another

As an old retired news photog I started with an Olympus C500 Zoom (5MP) - loved it. But I wanted more. I still have the Olympus but took the plunge into a Nikon Coolpix 8800 (8MP). A lot to learn but I'm getting there. Pictures I've taken with it look like there from a large format film camera and the 10X zoom with image stabilizer is great.
