Question

Restoring files from old Laptop to new PC

May 12, 2011 8:42PM PDT

Hi everyone- Not really a newbie, but have always said I'm only any good sitting in front of the computer, have no idea whats going on behind the scenes. This is now being tested. My laptop (Windows Vista) 'fried' last Wednesday-Graphics card cooked.Fortunately I have the old Hard drive, which the very helpful repair person said seemed to be OK, and had also backed up regularly (last Sunday last time) onto a WP External HD. So I have purchased a new PC Asus Aspire with AMD Pocessor- running Windows 7- all good, but cannot work out how to restore my files to the new one. I was advised to buy a HD case and cablel for the old internal HD and use this. ave done so and fitted it, and plugged in. It has files on it but they are in .GHS format. I have copied them onto my new PC, into a Folder on the Desktop- but now what? Have also tried to copy the Back-up for the External HD- this seemed to occur, but I have no idea where they are now. I've run out of steam now.
Any ideas?

That's strange

www.filext.com gives 4 options for the .ghs extension:
GHS=Glider Pro House File (John Calhoun)
GHS=Lasertank High Scores

GHS=Tarshare File

GHS=Ghost Disk Image Span File (Symantec Corporation)
I don't expect any of those to be present on the old laptop hard disk.That should show your Windows and Users folders (if standard Vista).

What program did you use to make the backup to the external disk? If it wasn't a simple file copy, you might need to use the corresponding restore program to get the data back.

And how did you copy that back-up yourself. If you used drag and drop in Explorer, they should be where you dropped them.

Maybe it's best to go to that very helpful repair person and see if he can help with this also.

Thanks for your reply Kees_B. So quick!! I backed it up using the Windows Back-up and Restore Centre. The I copied them, rather than drag and drop- and they've been copied.
