Restoring files from old hardrive...

Dec 7, 2003 1:53AM PST

Hello,

I have just bought a new computer with Windows XP installed on it and I also have a old hardrive from my old computer(which is now broke). What I was wondering is can I get all my files(work stuff, mp3's and saved games) from the old hardrive to the new one? The old hardrive has 2 accounts on it which are password protected so would this stop me from simply installing the old hardrive as a secondary drive and simply dragging the files to the new one?

Cheers

Since the old drive will not be the primary drive, I don't believe password protection will be an issue.

If the password protection is an issue, you may be able to use the old drive as primary and the new as slave to copy what you need.
My old drive wasn't protected, and I simply copied all my files and so forth to the new one.

You should be able to slave the old HDD and copy over the files.
But if you encrypt the files then it's a different story.

I have drives form different PCs and am able to do just that.

Pull out the HDD and on the top there should be a disgram of what jumpers to change to set it as the Slave HDD.

Then attach it to the middle connectot behind your new HDD and it will be recognized by the BIOS as the Primary Slave HDD.

Well I did as you said, installed the old drive as a secondary drive and it turns out that the My Documents" folder for my older account is access denied, this must be due to the account be password protected and I didnt share the my documents folder with anyone else! Is there anyway I can get round this like booting Xp up the the old hardrive and just changing the account type back?
