Question

Restoring Deleted Chrome History

Jan 19, 2015 6:52PM PST

I recently had issues with a browser hijacker and after removing the hijacker I deleted the history. However I would now like to check it. Can it be done? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That would depend on what you deleted and what you are trying to recover. Of course you've already checked History and looked in the recycle bin? Again, would depend on what you are trying to recover...more information on what you are trying to get back might help.

Do a system restore back to a time prior to your deletion of history

I don't think system restore includes application data like this. I even doubt that Recuva will find itm but since the OP is silent we'll probably never know.

Answer
you can get some of the info

In firefox check your cookies file, almost every site puts a cookie on there, so probably can figure out some of the sites from that. If you sync'ed your browser, then that information might be on another device, depending on which device is the control for the sync and if you've used the other device. If it had crashed, in your profile folder, look for a file called sessionstore, there may be several, find the one on the date or nearest the date you are looking for, it might be there. Also if it crashed, check the files in the crash folder.

If you ever corrupt your bookmarks file, there are automatic backups you can restore it from in the bookmarks folder under your firefox profile folder.

Why?

The Chrome browser itself provides nothing other than "favorites" in order to re-use it time and time again. Any history is gone and really I don't see why you need the history and recover it. More than likely you want to delete or remove the browser entirely in any hi-jacked or redirect malware. Too often any corrections won't take as not all the setting and "registry" are available and this would be too time consuming. I suggest, next time, "export" the favorites since this is about the only data that can be saved on its own. Then delete Chrome browser and if it states, do you want save anything, enter "NO". Once done and assured no malware or infection is present, reload Chrome browser and then "import" the favorites you had saved. Forget about looking at the history if you're attempting to see whre possible "hi-jack" attempt was made, too often it looks innocent.
