restart merry-go-round

Nov 4, 2005 8:47AM PST

os: win2000 pro

I receive these messages after system boots:

The procedure entry point EqualDomainSid could not be located in the dynamic link library ADVAPI32.DLL.

The system then shows this error message:

This shutdown was initiated by \. The system process C:\WINNT\system32\Isass.exe terminated unexpectedly with status code 128. This system will now shut down and restart.

After it shuts down and restarts, I get the same messages. I don't have any drive A: backup disks and for some reason the CD isn't being recognized so I can't use that. Suggestions?????

Valerie, You Must Install The Recovery Console Yourself..
Nov 7, 2005 9:18AM PST

Here is a link that will help you do that. You'll need the Windows 2000 CD to perform the operation.:

How to install the Windows Recovery Console

After the Recovery Console is installed, then follow the instructions given in my previous post:

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, start the computer by using the Windows 2000 recovery console, and then replace the Advapi32.dll file with a copy from the Q274172 hotfix files:

1. Start the computer by using the recovery console. To do so, start the computer from the Windows 2000 CD.
2. At the Welcome to Setup screen, press R.
3. Press C to repair a Windows 2000 installation by using the recovery console.
4. When you are prompted by the recovery console, type the number of the Windows 2000 installation that you want to repair, and then press ENTER.
5. Type the Administrator password, and then press ENTER.
6. Type cd system32, and then press ENTER.
7. Type ren advapi32.dll advapi32.old, and then press ENTER.
8. Type copy c:\winnt\$ntuninstallq274172$\advapi32.dll (where c: is the drive on which Windows is installed and winnt is the folder in which Windows is installed), and then press ENTER. The following message appears:
1 file(s) copied.
9. Type exit, and then press ENTER to quit the recovery console.
10. Start Windows as you typically do.
______________

If you don't feel confident enough to perform the procedure above, you'll need to find a friend or family member who can.

Hope this helps.

Dan, It Can Be Both...Depending On The Spelling
Nov 4, 2005 11:16AM PST

I think you've got the wrong file name...Yes, the lsass.exe file (that's ISASS.exe with an ''i'' as the first letter..When typing on the web, the lower cased L looks the same as the uppercased i) can be a trojan. A full system scan will indicate if the file is infected. But generally, the lsass.exe (that's LSASS.exe which stands for ''Local Security Authority Service) is a well known Windows file that resides in the C\Windows\System32 folder on Windows XP computers. It's a need file.

In this case, as the link I provided above explains, the file throws an error because other patches have been installed incorrrectly. The user certainly doesn't want to delete the required LSASS.exe system file.

Hope this helps.
