Response to question re: How to keep programs from booting u

Go to Start/Run
type in "msconfig" without the quotes
click ok
select the Selective Startup button
click the startup tab
uncheck all programs EXCEPT those you want to start
click APPLY/ok
you'll be asked to restart the computer
do it and away you go

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

When I try to put my computer in the stand by mode it turns off completely. I down loaded Microsoft Windows Installer cleanup Utility and it did not reslove the problem. If I reinstall Windows completely will that fix the problem?
