Question

Resetting Bios help!

Jul 6, 2016 11:33AM PDT

I have an HP 15-1337wm. I recently had a Linux OS dual booted with Windows 10. I had enabled the administrative password on the bios and as a secondary measure I enabled the Power On password as well from withing the bios. I removed the Linux OS by removing the partitions from within Windows and re-extending the windows partition. Now I cannot access my bios at all. When I power on or restart I am not given the option to boot in bios, it asks for my power on password and sends me directly into a GRUB menu for Linux. The only way to get out of that grub menu is to type "exit", which then goes straight into windows startup. Is there a way to reset my bios back to default without having to remove the CMOS battery? Thanks for the help.

Answer
While you may have to ask HP.

I've had to boot my W10 and then use W10's options to reboot into the UEFI BIOS.

I did contact them and they said that the only way is for me to send it to them to be repaired...grrr.

I've gotten around that in a few ways.

This is not a sure thing but I've removed the HDD to force the machine to offer up a BIOS option. Sometimes just holding down the Fkey that the model uses to get a BIOS option works.

Another trick I use is to plug in my W10 recovery key as well as unplug the HDD.

Which of these have you tried?

Neither

I haven't tried either of those options, as my experience only goes as far as taking apart Desktops, not laptops. If this was a desktop PC, I would just unplug the CMOS battery for about an hour, but I have no clue how to get to it on this device Sad

There are web pages on getting inside.

http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04330942 for example. Do you have your recovery media handy? There are things to try before we pull the HDD but remember this. I don't have your model so I can't tell you "this will work." I have a list of tricks but have to have the laptop to try them on.
