Res Shield Rogue or Real?

Feb 25, 2011 11:13PM PST

I have AVG 9.0

Resident shield is apparently part of the scan process, but apparently there's a rogue program masking as the legit Resident Shield and it unleashes malware, which I caught visiting a site that was supposedly deemed safe by AVG. I did a system restore, which didn't work...now Resident Shield keeps popping up. At this point I'm afraid to click it for fear it will unleash bad things. I've seen a couple pictures of the fake online, but for 2011 and mine didn't look like that. I'm starting to wonder if it was legit and I wouldn't be in this mess if I trusted it, but who knows.

Is there any way of knowing or any way to differentiate the real Resident Shield from the fake?

Infection
Feb 27, 2011 1:53AM PST

Hello amyten,

Please provide us with a screenshot of the suspicious warning window.

Also, if you think that your computer is infected, please proceed as follows:
Update your AVG, perform a full system scan and provide us with scan results.

Afterwards, provide us with both GMER outputs and with Autoruns tool output (as compressed .arn file).

As it is not possible to attach files here on cnet, upload them to online storage service and provide us with link.

Thank you

Just asking a question
Feb 27, 2011 8:23AM PST

Hi. Thanks for responding.

I wasn't really writing for diagnostics. The problem has been resolved.

I'm wondering about the fakery and malware that mimick legitimate programs. There is some malware out there that mimicks AVG and Resident Shield. My computer got infected by a site deemed safe by AVG, so when AVG produced a warning popup after visiting a site deemed safe, I wasn't really confident on trusting that popup. Was it a *real* AVG popup or malware?

And that's where my question lies...is there a way to know if it's "the real deal" or malware fakery? Is that AVG Resident Shield legit? Is there a way to know?
