There are a number of ways to remove left over listings in the System Configuration Utility by it would sure help if we knew a little more about the computer, specifically the operating system...With spyware programs, Try running all of the spyware removal tools below. They will frequently remove the registry entries that cause the programs to remain in msconfig..
In addition, you can edit the registry by locating the unneeded entries, then deleting them from the registry..UNCHECKED items in "msconfig" can normally be located at either of the paths below on Windows 98/ME:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run-(that's Run minus)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run- (that's Run minus)
And at these paths in Windows 2000/XP. (Windows 2000 will only have "msconfig" if you've installed it manually.):
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupfolder
Before making any changes to the registry, be sure to make a backup in case you make some removals that aren't correct.
Hope this helps.

This post was placed in the "A Few Tips for Computer Newbies" thread and rightly belongs as a separate topic of its own. It should receive more responses when it's not "buried" in the long thread. I'll remove it from the other location so others can respond here:
_______________
When you go into msconfig and there are possible spyware programs that you do not want, and they are already unchecked and not running, and the programs have already been removed though add/remove programs, then what is the best way to rid your computer of these? i.e.: newdotnet/bargainbuddy. Also what is the best way to rid IE of unwanted toolbars? I have removed aim from my computer and in msconfig it still lists that I have an aim toolbar startup. Does anyone have any experience with any of the things listed on Merijn.org?
