Question

Replacing router; where to go to find old router's software?

Sep 10, 2016 9:14AM PDT

I'm planning to replace my router; a 10 year old Linksys WRT54G router; do I need to uninstall that router's software first before installing software on a new router?

I've looked everywhere in Control Panel > Add & Remove Programs for anything labeled Linksys and there is nothing there labeled Linksys; should I look somewhere else for the Linksys software to remove it or not?

Why old software?

Why not just buy the router and hook it up then see if you need anything. That's what I would do.

Because this new router will be my "first" router purchase ever and I wanted to know if I needed to uninstall my old router's software which was installed by someone working for my brother 10 years ago when 2 new Dell computers were shipped to me from Dell Computers and my brother sent one of his employees from his company in Texas to my location here to hook it all up for me.

The only thing I now regret is not writing my old router's password down. I called Linksys tech support this week; talked to a guy in India who I couldn't understand and who also wanted to take control of my computer; I told him no and I hung up which is why I've decided to buy a new router. I should buy one because I've had mine for more than 10 years; it's time for an upgrade; maybe to a wireless N or whatever's the latest type being sold today.
