Replacing Motorola speedstream with another brand

My brother's Speedstream has died. Lights don't work, etc. etc. He has ATT DSL in Detroit; Detroit does not have an internet wireless service, so he has to deal with ATT. He's po'd that he's paying $92 a month for service that doesn't work. I told him he needed a new DSL modem.

Suggested Netgear DSL modem. Would anyone know what modems he should replace with the Motorola speedsteam?

O/S = Windows XP

Wow, are we getting the whole story?

$92/month for DSL internet service alone ... or is this ATT Uverse?

No, he has other services

ATT is charging $33 for the DSL, and the rest of it is all the bells and whistles with having a landline phone. He will call them tomorrow to change his account.
