Replacing Linux

Apr 11, 2011 10:12AM PDT

I have Lenovo S10 dual booting moblin and windows xp at the moment. I would like to replace the moblin installation with xubuntu and avoid a bootloader nightmare. What would be the easiest way to do so?

Mandriva One or PCLOS a shot and if you like it you can install it.

Ok. but i think i'll stick with xubuntu. I just want to know if i can just write over moblin without causing a bootloader(GRUB) problem.

Fixin' GRUB

Is a well discussed topic. After fretting about this for too long I've learned to boot my linux CD and follow the prompts and questions to remove the old version, remove the partitions for the old system and then let the linux boot CD and distro install the new version of Linux.

If grub fails I'm back to the web to see how to fix grub.

Moblin the desktop Environment?

I tried to use it on Mandriva, is one of the choices at Logon. Each time I open the browser it locks up. If that what are you talking about, I would not recommend Mandriva with. Seems that is not fully integrated yet.

If you find a Linux distro that has it, you could try to reinstall the Root partition and leave Home untouched, it should work, but not warrantied to work flawlessly since each distro configures things differently.

If deciding to go that route, back up everything if you can, make another user name so if yours fails you can use the other name to rescue it.
