Replacement HDD for Toughbook CF-18

Nov 6, 2007 3:43AM PST

I recently purchased a Panasonic ToughBook Cf-18KDHKBVM. This unit came w/ a 60GB HDD. I'd like to increase the HDD to 120-160GB.
Does anyone know of a compatible: Toshiba, Hitachi or Fujitsu that will fit the Caddy and ultimately replace the 60GB installed drive?

DO NOT GO PAST 127GB.

http://www.48bitlba.com notes why. But thankfully IDE 9.5mm high 2.5 inch hard disks are standard, plentiful and cheap today.

Go shopping at newegg.com, geeks.com or where ever you haunt.

I was told / it was suggested, that not just any 2.5" IDE ATA-6 / 100 drive will work w/ the CF-18.

I know for a fact that Panasonic uses Toshiba, Hitachi & Fujitsu, (Rebranded to Panasonic)but what specific Model numbers is unknown to me.

That would be a first.

I know the size issue but there are so many well meaning advisers out there you can take your pick of the free apples. That is, outside the 48bit LBA issue I'd like to hear why they said that.

"Your laptop may require a specific firmware version and/or configuration setting..."

This is what I was told by Toshiba when I queried them.

Absolutely.

Which is why I supplied the link so you can see the most common issue I encounter.

Let me share I've replaced what must be over a thousand drives in laptops alone and while I've read such admonishments the issue has never reared its head except for the issue I shared.

If you feel you can't do this, just take it to a shop to have it done for you. It will only cost a little more. Or try one of the many online drive upgrade sites. You'll pay a little more there but for those that must have the extra assurance this is best.

Absolutely

Actually, I've been preparing for this since I got the laptop. I've got an image on an external HDD (just in case) and plan to clone the new HDD via Acronis TI. All I need to purchase is a caddy (shopping for a good price), HDD,(naturally, that's why I'm here), and a USB to IDE cable.

thanks Bob

Any of them at 120Gb or less should be fine

I know this thread is way past it's prime but if you happen to have a look would you be willing to send me the image. I can't get it to recognize the external usb cd-rom. With an image I can just clone it to the hdd.

Thanks,
MLB

Personally, I would never send an image of my system, even if 8 years old, to somebody else. It contains private information, has my unique Microsoft licence code and is heavlily dependent on my exact hardware, so probably wouldn't even work on a random other PC.
