Resolved Question

Replacement for Creative ZEN 8GB?

Feb 25, 2012 6:00AM PST

My wife liked her Creative ZEN 8GB, but it just stopped working. Customer reviews of possible ZEN replacements all reveal problems that led us to search for a new brand. None of the few stores in our small town have a decent supply of MP3 players in stock. Everytime we find what seems like a reasonable replacement, it has a small (2") screen. Would you please suggest a model that is good for books, music, photos and videos, Has bookmarks, FM and has at least a 2.4 screen. We do not need ultra-high features or a touch-screen, just a sturdy, reliable mp3 player.

I thought the MP3 player market was shrinking?

Even so I picked up one as we are targeting Android devices. It's pretty nice to me so I'll share so you can look for it.

Philips GoGear Connect 8GB WiFi

It was under 95 bucks and the screen is very nice. Remember I am not using it as a MP3 player so any question you ask is one I may not be able to answer.

Replacement for a Craetive ZEN 8GB MP3 Player

Hi R. Proffitt,

Thank you for that suggestion. Its description makes it sound interest. I checked on Amazon where it currently sells for $119.00. One review said its memory can be expanded with an SD card, the next review said it cannot be expanded.

The biggest issue to me is that we really have no need for Wifi and wonder if having it is just more possible problems. That is, would we be less likely to have problems. if we got an MP3 player that does not have WEifi?

Have you had any experience with Phillips technical support.

I think I will keep looking (for a player without Wifi), but his Connect is on my llist to consider. It was a good suggestion.

Sorry but.

You will find that the market is shrinking fast. And I've encountered folk that want this, this, this and not that feature. They often get upset at the market or folk that share any device.

I could ignore WiFi if I wanted to. Let's hope you find your new player.

Sorry about that. Forgot your tech support question.

I've found all tech support over the last decade to fail me. When I reach the point of tech support it's usually a product defect. My background is circuit design, code and more. So the call to tech support is usually about a bug. And what I'm seeing is the makers rarely can fix a bug.

Replacement for a Creative ZEN 8GB MP3 Player

Hi R. Proffitt,

I just ordered a Phillipps Connect 8 GB from Amazon. I have my fingers crossed. My Ace in the hole is that if my wife does not like it, I can always say, it was not my choice, it was selected by a circuit designer.

Thanks for your help.

I'll take the blame on this one.

Amazon's return policy is pretty generous. Remember I don't use it much for audio play but as another possible target device for the company apps. They are always looking for 99 buck replacements for what was called a PDA years ago.
