Anybody? Just take a look, I don't mind if you want to tell me I should bail and get a new one...
Alright, so here's the quick and dirty description of my ongoing crisis (melodrama added for effect):
My used Compaq Presario 1700us caught fire last Xmas vacation, 2004. Yep, I saw fire in the exhaust vent, smelled electrical burning, smoke came out. The AC port then stopped working. The AC Port it seemed, had shorted out.
Couldn't use the warranty (the prior cosmetic damage voided it) so I took it all apart, and tried to pry off the AC adapter port to replace it myself. The port came apart, exposing the black charred corner of the motherboard.
SO! I really want an okay laptop (I'm going abroad in September for 10 months). I can't afford much - I was banking on this one.
A) Sell the CPU (833mhz), LCD screen, DVD/CDRW, RAM (256), etc on ebay and make about $150 (with which to "buy" a "laptop")
B) Replace the motherboard with another 17-- series mobo (probably on ebay, about $100)
C) Replace the motherboard with some other type of motherboard and essentially coble together a new machine with the old components
You guys seem to be really cool, and I know this is a huge question, but I've got no where else to turn.
