Repeats reboot after hibernation

Aug 17, 2007 11:27AM PDT

Laptop was put in to hibernation mode, and it did not seem to go down cleanly. Now when it attempts to come up it repeatedly reboots. It gets to the Windows XP splash screen then reboots again. A blue screen flashes, but is too quick to see what it says.

Problem may be due to corrupt hiberfil.sys. Is there a way to get to the C drive using a boot CD? I tried an XP boot CD ISO that I downloaded off the net, but can't get to the C drive.

System is running Windows XP Media Center Edition
Laptop is a Sony VGN-N160G.

Thank you.

Can you get into safe mode?

Did you try system restore?

Did you run any scans?

Safe mode and last known good configuration did not work.

I am hoping to not have to do a system recovery since I have data on there that hasn't been backed up.

What type of scan are you referring to? And how do you go about doing that?

Thank you.

Last Resorts

1.Running the Windows Recovery Console from an XP CD. 2.Removing the hard drive and placing it in an external enclosure to access files.

Thanks to all for the feedback. I was able to resolve the problem.

Here is what I did to resolve the problem.

The PC didn't come with an XP CD, so I had to borrow one from my son.
I booted with the setup CD and went in to the Recovery Console.

At the C: prompt I tried to do 'dir' and 'dir hiberfil.sys', but got a message concerning an enumeration error.

So I ran 'chkdsk'.

I then was able to do 'dir' and 'dir hiberfil.sys'.

I then did the following-
copy hiberfil.sys hiberfil.sav (just in case)
delete hiberfil.sys

exit from Recovery Console and removed CD

System was able to boot in to Safe Mode.

Then restarted Windows.

The system was then able to boot Windows normally.

Thanks again!

Just FYI-

Before booting from the XP setup CD, I went in to BIOS and removed the internal hard drive from the boot order.

After I did exit from Recovery Console, I went in to BIOS and put the internal hard drive back in to the boot order.
