Every time this comes up it's been no. The person asking doesn't own the hotspot so they don't have rights to extend coverage. As you know repeaters are dodgy things. And you would need one at about every 100 foot mark. Give it's 500 yards that's many repeaters.
In this case you need to get your own internet access.
Hello all,
I am a novice at wireless networking; yet, I am still trying to do more advanced things! That is where help comes in...
Basically, I want to take a local hotspot provided by a Cable Company (for which I have a login) and repeat it at my home. Then, hopefully use a router to setup my own wireless network so that I can use my google chromecast.
My current issues are:
1. The hotspot is located about 500 yards from my home and get a very very very weak signal at my house with my phone or computer
2. The wifi, when accessed, has a splash page login instead of WEP or WPA security
My Questions:
1. Is it possible to repeat this type of network/security combo?
2. If so, Is it possible to setup my own router from the repeater?
3. Am I correct in guessing that I can invest in some sort of outdoor long range antenna to pick up a better signal at my house?
4. What would be the best hardware at a reasonable cost?
I have already tried to use a Netgear N600 WNDR3400 router as a repeater, but I believe that the router is not receiving the network even if I am in very close range to the hotspot. I am not sure why this is happening, but my best guess is that it has to do with the security type?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
