Repeated Disconnections

Mar 23, 2007 11:18AM PDT

My mother recently bought a new computer with Windows Vista. In the past she's been using my old computer which had Windows XP and although her connection on the new computer is faster due to over all better hardware, she's getting disconnected every 10-15 minutes. I know for a fact this is not the fault of the ISP seeing as how I work at the ISP and she uses my free dialup account which, by the way, I also use at another location and it works fine. She bought a new surge protector just the other day which has a phoneline port on it. This seemed to help for a while. However, now she's back to getting disconnected again. Should we be contacting our phone company about phoneline surges or try calling the Geek Squad (it's an Acer computer from Best Buy)?

A little extra info..she can always tell when she's about to get kicked offline because her Yahoo Messenger will disconnect and not allow her to reconnect and her speed will drop significantly. The whole process can take up to 5 minutes to completely disconnect her.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

It's a warranty issue or...

You fix it by using a modem you know works.

I really don't think it's a modem issue. I have 2 reasons for this. One, it's a brand new computer. She hasn't even had it for 2 weeks. Second, if the modem didn't work she wouldn't be able to dialup in the first place. Dialup modems either work or they don't. They're so fragile that if something goes wrong they just break..a dialup modem can't just half-way work. Also, as I said, she can get a faster connection than she could before it's just the disconnection problem we're having that's annoying. But yeah, thanks anyway.
