I see a 14 inch Thinkpad T430 i7-3520m for cheap at https://www.groupon.com/deals/gg-lenovo-t430-thinkpad-14-laptop-refurbished?deal_option=55b9ef0a-8772-11e7-9011-00259060b5da
At 299 you could consider that and install a SSD if you feel the need.
I purchased my HP Spectre x360 13-4003 dx (i7) 2 years back. The laptop worked fine and suddenly the screen pixelated and the laptop died. now when I switch it on, the power button blinks but the screen won't light up. I took it to the service center and they said that there is an issue with the motherboard and it needs to be replaced. The problem is, I got this laptop for $1300 then and the motherboard is costing me nearly $800. Hp center wouldn't repair the motherboard (one of the capacitors got burnt off) . Should I consider a new laptop with the $800 budget or go for a motherboard replacement which would only come with a 3month warranty but then I would still have my convertible!
