Let me comment on " I want to load XP ". I suggest you don't do that but let the new laptop come with it ready to use. Loading the Windows OS proper seems to place too much strain on most.

I have an IBM ThinkPad 390x. 128 mb of RAM and 20gig hard drive. I've had it for about 5 years now. It's not the best or the fastest but it does what I need it to.
I was just told that the display needs to be replaced at an estimate of $500 for the part. At the moment I've got it hooked up to an external monitor and everything runs fine. However, the monitor connection takes away the whole mobility factor.
I figure it's not worth the $500 to put into fixing the old one so I'm thinking of buying a new one but I need just the most basic simplest notebook out there. I want to load XP and use it just for email, word processing, and surfing the internet (no games, no big downloads).
Any recommendations on a good, basic not too expensive model?
Any thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
