??Repair install procedures after sp3??

This has come up twice in the last couple of days. XP pro, moderately hosed up, before the user did the stupid things the computers were fully updated-incl SP3. Made a ghost image first thing then inserted XP pro disc, install, repair install option. Seemed to run usual amount of time, however, final reboot would not go into anything but safe mode. Tried turning off many of the usual things that stop normal boot, still haven't found the right combo. Should I have removed SP3 before repair install? Tried slipstreaming SP3 onto my xp disc? What about installing sp3 inside Safe mode? Thanks for any help.

XP is not always fixable. Maybe the damage runs beyond what any repair install can offer?

In focus -> Think over what a repair install does. Think about what files and registry items it doesn't touch. There is the the problem.

Am trying

The "Install sp3" from inside Safe Mode on one of them right now. Cross fingers and hope. If not good enough, maybe will try the slipstream SP3-however my first effort produced a disk that would boot and install - but no repair option. Still scratching my head.

Why slipstreams fail.

The most common reason I encounter is that they don't have a proper Retail XP CD to start with. Most machines are bought with some OEM XP or windows and those do not support repair installs. If so you need to adjust your repair methods to backup, restore the OS then the user's files and install the apps.

I've watched many waste a few months trying to fix this OS when the answer was to just wipe and start over.

That's what just worked-

The sp3 inside safe mode didn't work, but with a day old ghost image-nuke and pave and the first machine runs better than ever. Going to try the other machine back to sp2 then repair and so on. Genuine XP retail cd, I guess i've got some more to learn about slipstreaming.

I think in this case, GHOST is better.

Given Microsoft's new antimatter (things that don't matter to them) approach to service packs and how they interact with all the versions you find with XP out there the result is what happens when the SP3 antimatter is mixed with the CD (your matter) can be catastrophic.

In this case a drive image is best with a note how to move forward from that.

Yep to the 'Antimatter!'

Going around to the machines that matter-full ghost on dvd right now- save where the monkeys can't find them and breathe easier.
