Answer
Have you tried "Previous versions"?

In Windows 7 you can right-click a file and click Properties. Then at the top right of the result you'll see a tab called Previous Versions. That would be the first place to look, assuming your friend doesn't have a backup copy. In the future he would be well advised to make backup copies of anything he didn't want to lose.
`
Good luck.

Answer
Use a shadow copy of the document
Jun 29, 2015 7:53PM PDT

Windows 7 have the capability to create shadow copies of some documents. You can check to see whether a shadow copy of your Word document exists by right-clicking it and selecting Properties from the popup menu. On the Properties dialog, select the Previous Versions tab and select one of the available versions listed. If neither of Word's recovery features works, you may need to use a third-party recovery application such OfficeRecovery or EaseUS Data Recovery to repair your Word document. However, if your file is severely corrupted, a third-party utility may not work either.
