You can rename such, but them the function in OE is lost. Is that what you need?

You should think the names are hard-coded, and then they couldn't be changed (except possibly with Resource Hacker).
But ...
On my Windows 95 computer I had (of course) the Dutch version of IE5.5. The inbox is named 'Postvak in', the outbox 'Postvak uit'.
The latest 'cumulative patch' for IE5.5 from Microsoft only works on SP2, but since March 2003 SP2 is no longer downloadable from Microsoft's site. However, Larry Urban once pointed to a place (oldbrowsers, or something like that) where the full 80Mb of the setup-program could be downloaded (must be more then a little bit illegal, because of Microsofts copyright, but seemingly is tolerated by them). I happened to do so just yesterday evening. Of course, they only had the English version (and it totally hung when installing the newer Netmeeting, so I had to restart from my backup and choose to not install that program). Now I've got the English version of of IE5.5 and OE5.5 SP2, and apparently it still uses my good old 'Postvak in', not 'Inbox'. I'm sure I didn't do a rename, and I'm pretty sure I would have noticed the change in name and/or my new Inbox being empty.
So my preliminary conclusion is that somehow this is not totally hardcoded, but defined somewhere else. Which doesn't imply it can easily be changed, of course, but the fact seems to stand that I have an English version of OE where the 'inbox' is not called 'inbox' but 'Postvak in'. I'll do some research tonight and see if I can find out how it comes. Maybe in the registry, or in the 'folders'-file.

Well, it isn't in the registry. It must be in folders.dbx in your Outlook Express mailfolder. If you look inside it, you see the logical name (like 'Postvak UIT') and the physical name (like 'Postvak Uit.dbx') next to each other right at the start. Undoubtedly with some binary flags that causes OE to grey out the 'rename' item in the File menu (which shows it isn't supported in the regular way).
So the only way to change it, I'm afraid, is using some diskedit tool (in MS-DOS there were Norton Diskedit and Microsoft Debug) to change the logical name displayed in the folder pane in OE. They operate rather basically on sectors on the hard disk. I doubt very much if the old tools are safe to use in Windows 98, so better search for Windows 95+, FAT 32 compatible tools.
If doing it this way (I wouldn't recommend it, but you might be the more adventurous type), be sure to have a backup copy of the file, and edit only the file, not random sectors of your hard disk. It's easy to mess things up totally.
If you happen to change the physical filename, be sure to rename the file itself (xxx.dbx) correspondingly, or OE will create a new one ignoring your old data.

Forumsters,i don't want to rename at the expense of the folders loosing their function.I've renamed the Recycle bin through a registry hack and i thought it would be a similar simple procedure for the folders i mentioned.
Kees, the way you have described it,it looks like i shouldn't tackle it.I'm surprised this question hasn't arisen before.Regards,Gregg.
