Removing Windows xp

Jul 5, 2004 2:00PM PDT

my xp home OS is truly messed up. I want to uninstall it and reinstall it from scratch. Or maybe even uninstall it and install XP pro instead. How do I go about doing this?
(it is the OS that came with my computer. IT is not an upgrade.)

LeoAlpha,

It depends on whether you've got a Recovery CD/Partition from the manufacturer or whether you have the standard Windows XP HOME CD.

With the Recovery CD/Partition, simply place the Recovery CD in the CD-Rom, restart the computer, making sure that the BIOS is set to start from the CD-Rom before the hard drive, (or access the Recovery partition during the normal boot process) and all the reformat and recover options will be listed for you.

If you have the standard WinXP CD, then the link below should help you get it done:

Windows XP HOME Repair Install

Windows XP HOME Install

Hope this helps.

Well, I tried
Jul 6, 2004 2:47AM PDT

I booted from CD. (recovery CD)
Chose to install, not repair.
They asked where: in only available partition, or in 8 mb of unpartitioned space.
I chose in the partition. That is where my old OS is.
They said they dont reccomend putting two OS in one partition.
I say thank you, I'd love to delete the old one, but dont know how.
Any advice?

If you click on the second link I provided above, you'll notice immediately after you choose to install on the same partition (yes, there is a recommendation that it's not a good idea to do so), there will be an option to format the drive. Choose option to "Format the partition using the NTFS file system". The program will begin to format the partition and immediately afterwards will install the Windows XP setup files.

Maybe the link below will describe it a little better than the previous link, although there is no reason to delete the current partition. You'll only need to format the current one.

Thanks. Will this totally erase my old version?

Since everybody explains about one section of the process clearly, I'm gonna keep posting and reading until I know what I'm doing.
HOwever, this was the most helpful so far, so maybe I wont need to post further.
