Removing USB drivers via Device Manager?

Mar 10, 2004 7:46AM PST

(XP Pro, 1gig/ram, new system)

I ran into some trouble when installing an old Epson printer on my new system. I wanted to run two printers and both have XP drivers in place. I lost the Status Monitor function on both printers following the installation of the 440. The Epson 440 was connected by the serial port and the newest printer, an Epson CX5400, is connected via USB. I've tried everything to re-establish the status monitor function with the CX5400 but have had no luck at all. I want to delete the USB drivers through the Device Manager but see there are several including 4 Intel Host Controllers and multiple Root Hubs. Should I delete all of these drivers? I'm following PC Magazine's recommendation to do this and they then suggest reinstalling all the USB drivers which should re-establish the status monitor function. Whether or not it works is to be discovered. Is removing all the USB drivers sound like a logical plan? If so, then I need to know where do I find all the correct USB drivers to re-install? I've got all the system disks, recovery disks, etc. but unsure which one would carry all the USB drivers in XP.

I'd appreciate the help of anyone with this information! Thanks for the advice!

Perhaps I need to ask this question differently! How do I remove the USB drivers from my XP Pro system and then replace them with new/clean drivers? Where can I find USB drivers for a specific system. The manufacturer hasn't answered either! Is this a difficult task? I haven't had a single response on two posts in a week and wonder if there is somewhere I might go to find a solution? I would appreciate any ideas! Thanks.....

Have you try turning off the printer then back on again to see if the OS recognize it. I have a USB device (not a printer) gets recognize that way sometime (weird but I don't question why).

You needn't go there for a printer. What you need to do is start->setting->printers->rt. click on the printer and then select delete. The USB hubsand roots are part of your mtrbd. or USB card and really can't be gotten rid of. You can however, disable in the bios(if USB mtrbd. provided) one or more of the USB ports, but you disable a whole swatch of them at one time, so play with it, provided yours is more than 1 USB hub/root, save upon bios exit. After a reboot, under the device mgr. lessen USB hub/roots available. You can re-install the CX54400 and check results, but be sure that physical USB port is active, you may have to move the cable to another port.

good luck -----Willy
