Removing unnecessary fonts and preinstalled games (Vista OS)

Jan 11, 2008 1:53PM PST

I dislike seeing a long list of fonts, especially when I need to choose only one font in Microsoft Word.
Most of them look very similar, so I would like to remove some of those preinstalled fonts. Which fonts are really necessary to run Vista?

I also would like to remove all preinstalled games that come with the Operating System plus with the computer. What is a safe way to do it?

Thanks.

I'll help with item two

Start> control panel> programs and features> in the right column, see: Turn Windows Feature on and off, click it. Now wait, this takes awhile, then unclick games. This will disable the preinstalled Windows games.

About number one, if you uninstall a font that the OS needs when it calls for it, it will generate an error message that you'll have to live with till you reinstall the OS. An error like this can also render a program useless. I'd stay away from these. Guess how I know?

For Fonts...

See C:\Windows\Fonts and delete those you don't want. As Dango said, though, it's generally not a good idea as some programs may cease to function if the proper font(s) can't be found. You can usually get away with removing Webdings and the like, but you'd be wise to instead move them to another folder somewhere from which you can restore them later if need be.

Hope this helps,
John
