Question

removing hdd password

Mar 11, 2016 8:52AM PST

i have a samsung np-nc10. i broke the screen and only about 20 keys work on the keyboard. i need detailed instructions for removing the hdd password i setup thru the bios. i can't see the bios screen with an external monitor or i wouldn't need this info. the computer is about nine years old and has an award/phoenix bios. if anyone has this model and can help me, i'd greatly appreciate it. thanks

Answer
The only fix I know in the field

Is to get another np-nc10 and put this drive into the machine and type in the password. Now you can boot up and retrieve your files. This is cheaper than data recovery houses so that would be my solution.

if i had access to another np-nc10 i'd have already used it. i don't think i know anyone in my area that has one. as it is i got this one from a friend.

Last time I did this, it was a laptop from ebay.

And the reason was simple. Data recovery cost was higher than the used machine.

PS. If it's just the drive you want to replace.

Laptop 500GB HDDs are now under 40USD here. So the cost to get the drive working may exceed the cost of the drive. I'm guessing what you need to do here. Data recovery or just getting the drive working. One way you search for a good machine or replace the keyboard if that's broke (or try some USB keyboard.) If it just needs a HDD, then get that.

Find the cheap exits is my advice here.

So the data is not to be recovered.

All this and well, some drives are forever locked but without the make, model of the HDD I can't look to see if there is some unlock routine. Such a routine will be or not at the HDD maker's site.

Sorry for the back and forth but the goals were unclear.

It's not like these drives are worth much today.
