Removing Google Desktop Toolbar at Start Up

Feb 3, 2009 6:28AM PST

I use Google Desktop on my Vista PC, but I want to deselect the Google Desktop Toolbar at start up so that I automatically have a transluscent taskbar in Vista (when Google's toolbar is running, the taskbar becomes solid).

I've looked through the Google Desktop preferences to no avail; I can't find any way to disable this "feature" on startup. Instead, I have to right click on the taskbar, go to Toolbars and deselect Google Desktop each time I boot the PC. It's a minor inconvenience, I realize, but still annoying.

Does anyone know how to disable the Google Desktop toolbar on start up?

Try MSConfig...

If you press Windows + R and enter msconfig into the Run box you should then be able to select the Startup tab, uncheck any apps (including the Google Desktop Toolbar) you do not want to run at startup, click OK, and reboot your computer for the changes to take effect.

Hope this helps,
John

I appreciate the help, but I really do want Google Desktop to load on start up, just not the toolbar in the Vista taskbar. I simply want disable that. And, I can't seem to find a setting to do so.

Perhaps someone out there has a solution. I went to Google's site and have been unable to find an answer. This is more of an annoyance than a true problem, I realize, but I'm surprise that this isn't a user-configurable feature.

hey, "C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search" or what ever it might be on vista....

Rename "GoogleDesktopDeskbar2.dll" to "_GoogleDesktopDeskbar2.dll"

does this help you?

I may try that, but after finding no solution, I simply got rid of Google Desktop at startup and am using Windows desktop search and sidebar instead. It works just fine and I don't miss Google at all.

Having no problems with the much-maligned Vista. Thanks.

Thanks for posting how to get rid of Google's invasion of my tool bar. Amazing how annoying little things like this can be.
