Removing excess junk in the

Dec 1, 2003 1:50PM PST

Hi everyone =D

I've noticed in Windows, that as i remove programs from my computer, the uninstalled program tends to linger in the "open with" dialog/menu for files that aren't associated with any programs.

I was wondering if there was a way to remove this excess junk?

Blaine,

Here are a couple of links that should help you remove the correct entries. (Make sure that you make a backup of the registry.):

Since you didn't give us your operating system, then two articles below will give you enough info, if you search through the links and conversations. Generally though, this works in Windows ME/2K/XP.

Click on Start > Run > regedit
Navigate to this path: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\
- Find the extension for the filetype which has a cluttered "Open With" menu.
- Now goto the "OpenWithList" folder and delete the entries for software you no longer want to appear...

Then, if there are any remnants in the "Control Panel-Add/Remove Programs" section:

Hope this helps.
