removing all data from old computer

I am donating my computer and want to know how to erase all of the data so that it can no longer be recovered. The computer has been reformatted already. What else do I need to do before giving it away.

You can't

There's ALWAYS going to be some chance that someone could retrieve the data from it, so if you want to be 100% sure, donate it sans hard drive.

Take a look at software that will 'wipe the drive'.

Drive mfgs usually offer SW that will write ZEROs to the entire drive and there are also commercial programs like 'WIPE DRIVE' certified to wipe the drive to a DoD standard. I opted to purchase "Wipe Drive" several years ago.

Bottomline....software to wipe drives in PCs being disposed of whether being donated to charity or given away to family or friends should be part of any users software 'toolkit'. There are some freeware or shareware option here too ... just never had the occasion to try them.

Here's a link to another program...

Check out Killdisk or Dban....use google.

99% effective.

If you want the other 1%....destroy the HD.
